The Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida was host to the 2015 GEICO Endurocross on Friday, March 6th. Offroad racing bikes, racing rigs, racers, and spectators were plentiful surrounding the Daytona Beach venue. Offroad enthusiasts were excited to have the opportunity to enjoy some endurocross racing action on Friday night before heading to the Daytona International Speedway over the next few days to see the 2015 Daytona Supercross by Honda and Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross. Friday was also the official start of Bike Week 2015, and bikers in town for Bike Week were also among the endurocross spectators. All were in for quite a show!
The 2015 GEICO Endurocross action began as early as 9am, when amateur riders arrived to begin their day of racing. The Geico Endurocross features both amateur and pro racing, with the amateur riders running all their qualifying heats during the day. Those amateur riders finishing well enough to qualify for the main event then have the opportunity to race their main events as a part of the pro "night show." In addition to the Expert/Pro class racing, the night show included Trialcross, Open Amateur, Vet Plus 35, and Women's classes.
In the Expert/Pro class, each rider took to the track one at a time to determine who would win the Hot Lap contest, and first gate pick. The fastest laptime belonged to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing-backed rider, Mike Brown. The gate pick would prove to be helpful, as Brown got the holeshot, along with the Nexen Tire $500 holeshot award. He looked to be racing for the win, but several crashes would lead to a sixth place finish at night's end. Defending GEICO EnduroCross AMA Champion Cody Webb would take over the lead in lap three, and continue on to take the win, and the points lead. Colton Haaker would finish second, and Kyle Redmond in third.
In the Women's class, a battle on the final lap between Morgan Tanke, Shelby Turner, and Tarah Geiger got the crowd cheering. Tanke would take the win, with Turner and Geiger finishing second and third, respectfully. The Open Am top three were Cooper Abbott, Quinn Wentzel, and Steve Deines. Trialcross class riders showed off their balance and bike skills as they tackled the tough endurocross course. The Trialcross win belonged to Ty Cullins. Quinn Wentzel would finish second, ahead of Christopher Venditti. Stephen Foord, Jason Raines, and Johnny Barber were the top three in the the Vet 35 Plus class.
The 2015 GEICO Endurocross Series moves next to Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 21, 2015. To get more information about the series, purchase tickets, or to sign up to race, visit www.endurocross.com.
